Complete Wine Course
2008 Edition
(Sterling Publishing)
DISCOVER - April 7, 2009
Take a break from the sound-bite world. Recall warm spring days at school pursuing reason, quenching curiosity. Those who know much and not so much can benefit from Kevin Zraly's classroom approach to wine education.
The 2008 Edition of his book is out, sporting a new 60-page supplement. The main text is organized into eight straightforward "classes" covering the major wine regions of the world, such as "The Red Wines of Bordeaux." The classes are full of easy-to-understand charts, maps, labels and graphs. The text is colorfully presented with handy, well organized captions that often take the form of questions. For example: "Why are the well-known great Burgundies so expensive? Are Americans drinking more white wine or red?"
Like fine wine, Zraly strikes an elegant balance. This is a reference book, yet it is fun to read. It is seriously informative but breezy and relevant not dry and academic. The useful supplement recommends books for your wine library and addresses questions of the day, such as "Do all wines need corks?" Zraly has the courage to take positions on timely topics, which gives readers grist for lively cocktail conversation. For example: The best winery in California? (Mondavi and Beringer). The best wine in the world? (Chateau Latour)! What's your best?
