Sculpterra Winery and Vineyards
TRAVEL - July 28, 2009
Through the ages and across the seas, wine has inspired artistry. Horace observed: "Wine brings to light the hidden secrets of the soul." In the dusty, hot, hardscrabble hillsides of East Paso Robles, wine's inspiration has carved magnificent sculptures.
When next you visit California's central coast, take time to stop at Sculpterra Winery and Vineyards. As the accompanying images reveal, tasting wine here is a treat for the palate and the eye. Like many newcomers to wine country, Dr. Warren Frankel and his wife Kathy sought the simple life. It started with 20 acres of pistachios in the Linne Valley. Some six times as many acres of vines soon followed. Now collaboration with world-renowned sculptor, John Jagger, brings a remarkable collection of outdoor sculpture to the winery grounds.
But the artistry does not end in the sculpture gardens. In every corner of the tasting room, the embellishments of master blacksmith, Robert Bentley, are displayed. On beams, signs, fences, gates and even in the washrooms his handy-work pleases you. It's a delight for the curious among us, to say nothing of the splendid wines produced by the Frankel's son, Paul. We particularly liked the 2006 Maquette (a French term for little statue), a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah.
We never cease to be amazed at the creativity and artistry that the wine country lifestyle inspires.
